You need to meet the educational and experience requirements set by PMI to appear for the exam.   • Four year Bachelor’s Degree or the global equivalent

Note to PMP Aspirants:- 

  • Your total project management experience hours don’t need to be on a single project. It can be a combination of multiple projects.
  • Your active involvement in the project management lifecycle shouldn’t be in a single project. Again it can be a combination of multiple projects.
  • You don’t have to be a project manager to acquire experience hours. Active involvement in project management at any position will be sufficient.

The project management experience hours and bachelor/diploma are what you will acquire throughout your career. However, for 35 Hours of project management learning, you’ve to connect with a PMI Authorized PMP Training partner. You will receive the PMP education of 35 hours, equivalent to 35 PDUs (Professional Development Unit). Without 35 PDUs, you won’t be eligible for the PMP Examination as it is one of the PMP Prerequisites. 9. Finally, the exam:-

PMP Application filing

After acquiring the final 35 PDUs certificate and fulfilling the eligibility criteria, your next step is to fill up the PMP application form. 

Either you can do it by yourself, or you can ask your ATP to do the hard part for you.

First, you need to visit the PMI website and click on the online application form under my PMI section.

You can either apply online or offline. While presenting the application offline, you can download the application form, fill it out and send it to the PMI US office via mail.

Of course, almost no one goes for that. So here comes the online method, where you have to be very cautious while filling out your application form and completing it within 90 days. PMI never stores your application data permanently; it erases the same after 90 days. 

While filling the form, take care of the main parameters like 

1. Your personal information, including your name, contact info, permanent address, etc.)

2. Name of the college/university from which you’ve acquired your degree/diploma.

3. Contact hours number completed by you.

4. Mention the project comes under your project management experience. 

The project management experience section will consume lots of time. Apart from adding the exact start and end date of every project, you would’ve to mention the working hours. It is further broken down into project management, five process groups lifecycle and the point of contact with their information (whoever can verify that you legitimately worked over the same project). You have to mention the description of work done, too, using the PMI terminology. 

That said, you have to write down the work done on every project, extract the project management experience from it and rewrite the same using PMP terminology.

Once you’ve done all of that by yourself successfully, you will receive the acceptance confirmation within a week.

PMP Exam Pattern

PMP Exam consists of a proportion of questions from three different domains:- 

1. People – 42%

2. Process – 50%

3. Business Environment – 8%

More simply, the PMP Exam consists of 180 questions within 230 minutes. Approximately 76 of 180 questions are from the People Domain, 90 from the process and 14 from the Business Environment domain.

The exam is comprised of:
  • One hundred eighty questions (the previous exam was 200), but the number of questions scored will be the same.
  • You have to submit your exam in under 230 minutes.
  • Two 10-minute breaks for online-based tests. No breaks for paper-based exams.
  • Questions will be a combination of multiple-choice, multiple responses, matching, hotspot and limited fill-in-the-blank

  6. Plan and manage schedule
  7. Control quality of products/deliverables
  8. Plan and manage scope

  10. Manage project changes
  11. Plan and manage procurement
  12. Manage project artifacts
  13. Determine appropriate project methodology/methods and practices
  14. Establish a project governance structure

Business Environment – 8%

This domain talks about highlighting a bridge between projects and organizational strategy 

  1. Plan and manage project compliance

PMP Certification Cost

The Project Management Professionals (PMP) training offers exposure to best practices in leading, managing, and directing projects. The certification provided by PMI (Project Management Institute) enjoys global recognition but can be challenging for those on a tight budget. The cost of pursuing a PMP Certificate can vary with the institution, mode of training, country, and how much you are willing to pay. With the rising demand in project management, there is a significant increase in compensation to teach or certify projects. Let’s look at the generic cost of PMP Certification as per PMI.

There are two PMP Costs associated with overall PMP Certification.

1. PMI cost to give PMP exam which is around 405 USD for members & 555 USD for non-members

2. PMP training cost incurred by PMI ATP, which is around 310 USD

Both are mandatory; however, you can avoid the second one if you are super talented and confident enough to clear the PMP exam in a single attempt on your own. Also, you’ve to show 35 hours of project management learning from elsewhere. 

PMI membership & Fees

Also, PMI PMP Fees are separate for Members and Non-Members. Those who’ve opted for PMI Membership need to pay around 405 USD to appear for the PMP Exam. However, you have to pay a different amount for PMI’s membership. If you’re willing to do other certifications from PMI like PMI-ACP, CAPM, RMP, DASM, etc., membership will benefit you. You’ve to pay approx 139 USD to get the PMI membership, using which you can get huge discounts on multiple certifications.

PMP Exam fees for non-members is 555 USD, in which you will get three attempts to clear the exam in a year. Now there is a catch, and you’ve to pay an additional amount if you can’t pass the PMP Exam in a single attempt. You have to pay a different amount equivalent to approximately 275 USD for every effort if you have the PMI Membership. If not, then the amount on another attempt will be 375 USD.

PMI Audit Process

After filling and submitting your application at the PMI portal, Your application will be reviewed and approved by the PMI in approximately 5 to 7 days. It’s an easy process if everything provided from your end checks out. 

If the application submitted by you is suspicious or the information you’ve provided doesn’t sound legitimate, PMI will issue an audit in which they will ask for the followings:- 

1. Project management experience verification

2. Verification of 35 contact hours of project management education

3. Formal education verification

Project Management Experience Verification

Those aware of your project management experience on your application are required to fill out a Project Management Experience Audit form. It can be anyone from your past projects, including your manager, supervisor, or colleague who has first-hand knowledge of your project management experience. Once the form is filled, a dedicated person (whoever is attesting your project management experience on your behalf) is required to prepare an envelope, put the audit report in that, sign their name over the envelope and post it to PMI. The PMI won’t accept the substitution, incomplete form or scanned copy.

Verifying 35 Contact Hours of Project Management Education 

You need to provide complete documentation stating that you’ve completed 35 hours of project management education. It can be any certificate provided by the ATP, Transcript or letter of attendance from the institution. Again PMI won’t accept the substitution.

Education Verification

You’ve to send your Degree/Diploma or whatever education you’ve done to PMI via postal. 

So this is almost the complete process for PMP.
